Pete has been a specialist in corporation tax since joining Company Tax Division at the Inland Revenues Head Office in 1994. Since going into private practice in 1997, Pete has advised a wide range of clients, from owner-managed businesses through to the largest corporate groups, advising them on all aspects of corporation tax.
Over the last few years, Pete’s involvement with HMRC consultations has helped shape several aspects of the current corporation tax regime, including the 2011 changes to the capital gains exit charges and the new transactions in securities rules for income tax purposes.
In a recent case, we advised on the consequences of capital transactions in land that might have been recharacterised by HMRC as trading transactions. By carefully analysing the legislation and the potential tax at risk, we were able to advise the client on the best way to carry out the transaction with the minimum risk of HMRC challenge.
We have recently given tax advice to the producers of a Channel 4 documentary, Dispatches: Secrets of the Taxman, broadcast on 9th July 2012.
